Empanadas 101: The Complete Guide
You probably won’t find “Empanadas 101” among your local university’s course offerings, but we happen to think this would be a great way to learn about Argentinian culture and cuisine. We’ve taken things into our own hands by creating Quebracho’s own primer on everything empanadas.
What Are Empanadas?
The empanada is a food with a lot of history. These hand pies are usually made up of a combination of meats, vegetables, and cheese contained in a flaky dough. They originated in Spain and Portugal hundreds of years ago – maybe even as far back as the 16th century! Empanadas were introduced to Latin America by Spanish colonists, and they remain very popular to this day. Argentinian empanadas like ours usually include beef, chicken, or vegetables and cheese.
Empanadas began as a workday lunch due to their convenience, but they quickly became an important part of Argentinian culture. Families often come together to prepare and eat this versatile food during parties and Sunday dinners.
How Can You Eat Empanadas?
Eat local Minnesota empanadas at lunch, as an after-school snack, or as your main dish at dinner – they’re great for any meal! You can eat your empanadas on their own since they are so packed with flavor, or you can “dress them up” with additional flavors that complement the other dishes at the family barbecue or party. People in Argentina and all over the world have created many delicious sauces to go with their empanadas: chimichurri, ají criollo, creamy avocado dips, and many more.
What Makes Empanadas Great?
Empanadas are so versatile that they can be eaten at any time of day, as a snack or a meal, alone or with a condiment. They are a great grab-and-go food, and since empanadas are handheld, there’s very little mess.
